With Beninese origins, Tobi currently lives and works in Germany. As a multidisciplinary artist, her artistic practice allows her to express herself through multiple mediums and techniques such as installation, photography, video and artistic performance. Humanity, interpersonal interactions, women’s rights and society are reoccuring themes in her work.
Used in psychiatric institutions, the straitjacket keeps the patient from moving to prevent them from harming themselves and others. But where does this “danger” really come from? Does the patient become safer? In Beninese language Yoruba, “Shé Wéré” means skylark, act crazy. This project - shown since 2012 as a performance or installation - is meant to raise awareness on the many devices, rules and norms established in our societies to control us and limit our freedoms.
