Abstractions de contrôle
Born in 1984, Sébastien Mettraux es a painter, sculptor, engraver, and graduate of the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (2006) and of the Geneva University of Art and Design (2002). He works in Vallorbe, Switzerland, in the valley of the watchmakers. His studio is situated in the railway station of the village.
"My engraving practice aims to recuperate and “reformat” existing serial images, looking at issues of processes of control and surveillance. I decided to track down these “authoritarian” abstractions with the goal of reproducing and multplying them the way a forger would. Radio surveillance labels, schemas issued from police procedures, identity documents and transport tickets: these are some of the elements that I appropriated. The methods I use are quite minimal (printed without a press, using a spoon) so that prints can be made anywhere with this alternative and autonomous process."
