Artist biography

Founded in 1998, the Montreal International Documentary Festival presents a selection of the year’s best documentaries from Canada and around the world for general and professional audiences. Documentary film has a unique place in Quebec, and its influence remains significant.

Deborah Stratman is a Chicago-based artist and filmmaker. Much of her work points to the relationships between physical environments and the very human struggles for power and control. Most recently, she has questioned  historical narratives about faith, freedom, sonic subterfuge, expansionism and the paranormal. Stratman works in multiple mediums, including sculpture, photography, drawing and audio. She has exhibited internationally and her films have been featured at numerous international festivals.

Project approach

How are ambiant sounds recreated in movies? The RIDM invites you to participate in a workshop to learn the art of sounds with soundengineers. You will also discover Deborah’s short movie, Hacked Circuit, a reflexion on modern surveillance methods through the observation of the profession of audio engineering.
