à table !
Mélanie Désourdy lives and works in Montreal. After her Bachelor’s degree in art education at Université Laval, she continued her studies in visual arts at UQAM. She has been an active painter and photomontage artist for 15 years. À table! is her first installation.
The audience is in a kitchen. As they open the refrigerator’s door, they step right into the artist’s and her family’s food intimacy. Two years’ worth of grocery bills are spread inside the fridge, along with statistics on their food consumption. If they open the freezer’s door, a mirror reflects their image and they become Big Brother themselves. As her fridge shifts from a private to a public space, the artist reclaims her own information, which had until then been under the control of the food industry. She recovers her gustatory liberty.
