Extension du vide
Born in Paris, Marie-Julie Bourgeois graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle as well as Ensadlab. She is now preparing for a doctorate while teaching digital art. She is interested in light and the “machines of vision”. She has exhibited in France, Brasil and Norway.
Extension du vide (extension of emptiness) is an extension of our vision through the multiplication of the cameras which watch over us. Vigilants of the city, camouflaged in the corners of buildings, waiting for something to pass by. The multitude mechanical vision allows us to have eyes everywhere at all times. Some real and camouflaged, others fake and visible.
The public is observed by a dematerialized camera, this way the object’s function is more important than the object itself. The camera is fake yet our reaction is the same. This piece questions the future of surveillance cameras in a society where the image prevails, where the interactions become increasingly virtual.
